The Curriculum

THE CURRICULUM

At Bishop Cornish School we combine the requirements of the National Curriculum and the desirability of a broadly based creative curriculum with an emphasis on the acquisition of strong skills of literacy and numeracy.  Children experience a wide range of subjects to give them a sound foundation for their future life.  We believe that sport, music, drama and creative arts are very important parts of a child's education.  Equal opportunities are basic to our school.

The subjects in the National Curriculum are divided up into two groups.  Firstly, there are the "Core Subjects" and, secondly, there are the "Foundation Subjects".

THE QUALITY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

We believe that careful planning and assessment are at the heart of good teaching and sound learning.  We aim to provide an exciting, creative curriculum and allow for differentiation of task according to individual ability, to motivate all styles of learners.

The Foundation Stage curriculum is based on the following areas of learning:

  • Personal Social Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Creative Development
  • Physical Development

The Early Learning Goals (ELGs) are all the objectives within each of the areas.  Children work towards achieving the ELGs.

Key Stages 1 and 2 - the tasks and topics are specific for each year.
